The St. Helena School Chairperson of Adopt A School,Marge Jarvis and Alison Barton, Volunteer Coordinator.
Our guest speakers for the Nov. meeting were from the Adopt-A-School (AAS) program at St. Helena Elementary – Marge Jarvis, Chairperson and Alison Barton, Volunteer Coordinator. The program is aimed at recruiting, training and supporting volunteers in their efforts to provide individual attention to students needing help in various subject areas as well as working on cataloging books in the library. The grade levels are from pre-K through 5th grade. The Alphabet Junction program is for high risk kindergarten students needing help with basic reading skills. A volunteer will work 1 on 1 with children learning English as a second language. Adopt-A-School provides free breakfast, lunch and snack. Currently, 90 children receive food for a meal over the weekend. The book distribution program held twice a year, allows students to select a book to keep and take home. The aim of Adopt-A-School is to instill a love of learning and provide an opportunity for volunteers to make a difference in a child’s life.

Brittney Hiller, Laughing Yoga.
Our special guest, Brittney Hiller, explained the value of belly breathing and laughter. This mind-body exercise helps a person to feel happier from laughing while bringing more oxygen to the body. With everyone circled in a large group, we learned how to clap hands, stretch arms, breath and enjoy the feeling of spontaneous laughter with others that brought back the happy memories of childhood again.
