First "The Water is Wide, Pat Conroy Scholarship" Awarded
The Fripp Island Women's Club awarded the first The Water is Wide Pat Conroy Scholarship to Lorrae Sherrill Evans. As part of the presentation, Cassandra King Conroy gave Lorrae a signed copy of The Water Is Wide. Lorrae is attending USCB as a senior and majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management. The scholarship intent is to provide financial assistance to someone who has had education interrupted and yet desires to return to school. She will continue work toward a degree that will provide better employment and financial provision for the family. Lorrae earned an Associates Degree in Paralegal Science from the Technical College of the Lowcountry. She has volunteered her services at Lowcountry Legal Volunteers and is currently a full time employee at the Hampton Inn on Hilton Head. Lorrae is the full time caretaker and sole support of her mother who suffers from several medical conditions. However, she continues to pursue her dream of a Bachelor's degree and eventually work in the hospitality industry in the legal department or in quality assurance. Her future plans may involve some travel but her heart and her home will always reside in the lowcountry. The Fripp Island Women's Club is proud to provide financial support through this scholarship to such a qualified and capable individual.
Applications for the scholarship are available through the Guidance Department at USCB and on the FIWC website, frippislandwomensclub.com.
